MSI's Call of Duty RTX 5080: what the limited edition changes

MSI's RTX 5080 COD MW4 Edition became available in selected markets on October 23; Japanese retail started October 24 at ¥369,800. The special cooling colors and backplate change the look, while the confirmed GPU remains an RTX 5080 with 16GB GDDR7.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • MSI announced selected-market availability for October 23 through selected resellers and its e-shop; Japan retail began October 24 at ¥369,800 in AKIBA PC Hotline's report.
  • The card uses an RTX 5080 with 16GB GDDR7, one 16-pin power connector, three DisplayPort outputs, and one HDMI output; its special-edition changes focus on the cooler and backplate design.
  • MSI calls the model a limited edition but publishes no global MSRP or edition-specific performance test in the release; buyers should compare local stock, PSU and case fit, and warranty terms.

The launch date depends on which market you are checking

MSI announced the RTX 5080 16G COD MW4 Edition OC on October 16, with availability beginning October 23 in selected countries through selected reseller partners and the MSI e-shop. The Japanese MSI release lists retail availability from October 24, one day later. AKIBA PC Hotline reported a Japanese shop price of ¥369,800 for model G508016MW4EC. That is a local retail snapshot, not a worldwide MSRP or a promise that every reseller received stock.

The collaboration is timed around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and uses a military-inspired color scheme. MSI's global launch release calls the card a limited edition and identifies the game as the design inspiration. It does not give a production quantity. In the Japanese release, MSI also describes the card as a limited-design collaboration, so a buyer should verify the exact shop listing rather than infer how many units exist from the word “limited.”

The special treatment is on the cooler and backplate

The visible changes include a yellow-coated heatsink, custom fan treatment, a transparent section in the backplate, and a Ghost character portrait under the clear panel. MSI says this is its first coated heatsink design and pairs it with the TRI FROZR 4 cooling system and STORMFORCE fans. AKIBA PC Hotline also reports a seven-blade STORMFORCE fan and a nickel-plated copper baseplate. Those details describe the card's cooling and appearance, not a separate graphics chip.

The product code contains “OC,” but the launch material does not publish a clock-speed table or a side-by-side benchmark against MSI's standard RTX 5080. A buyer should not assume the collaboration art alone adds a measurable frame-rate increase. The card is still an RTX 5080 class GPU; its confirmed distinction is the edition-specific shroud, heatsink color, and backplate. For performance, compare tests of the exact SKU or use the standard RTX 5080 results as a reference with the configuration clearly identified.

The confirmed core is 16GB of GDDR7

AKIBA PC Hotline lists 16GB of GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit interface, with one PCIe 16-pin auxiliary power connector. It reports three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI port. This gives a buyer a concrete compatibility checklist: confirm the case has room for the card, the power supply has a compatible 16-pin lead or approved adapter, and the monitor inputs match the ports. Card length and thickness should be checked against the exact regional product page before ordering.

The 16GB memory capacity is useful context for high-resolution games, but VRAM alone does not predict frame rate. Settings, ray tracing, upscaling, processor, cooling, and driver version also shape performance. For an existing RTX 5080 owner, the custom cooler and backplate are the clearest differences; a player upgrading from an older card should compare measured results for the whole system and the total build cost.

A graphics card still needs a supporting PC

The TRI FROZR 4 cooler, three STORMFORCE fans, coated heatsink, and copper baseplate are intended to manage GPU heat. Those components are part of a complete graphics-card installation, not a ready-to-play system. The owner still needs a compatible motherboard, processor, memory, case clearance, and adequate power supply. A large cooler can occupy several expansion slots and obstruct other components, so use MSI's exact dimensions and the PC case's usable clearance rather than relying on a photo.

A 16-pin power connector also makes cable choice important. Check the graphics card and power-supply manuals for the supported cable or adapter and avoid forcing a connector into a tight bend against the side panel. A well-ventilated case helps the cooler move air, while a cramped build can change temperatures and fan noise. These are ordinary RTX 5080 installation checks; the limited design does not remove them. The card's actual noise and temperature should be taken from a review of this model rather than inferred from the fan name.

Japan has a published store price; other markets need local listings

AKIBA PC Hotline reports the Japanese retail price as ¥369,800 and says sales began October 24 through several named Akihabara retailers. MSI's global announcement says selected countries, selected resellers, and the MSI e-shop, but does not publish a country-by-country price table. A U.S. buyer should therefore look for the exact G508016MW4EC model on MSI's local store or an authorized reseller and compare the displayed price, shipping, tax, and return window before checkout.

The word “limited” can describe a product run without telling a shopper how many cards a store will receive. Check whether the listing is a preorder, in-stock item, or a regional backorder, and confirm the model code before comparing prices. A listing for another RTX 5080 with a similar yellow accent may be a different product. The Japanese price is a useful reference for one market, but exchange-rate conversion alone does not account for local tax, distributor pricing, or retailer bundles.

Check the warranty and bundle before you pay

MSI Japan's release says its RTX 50-series cards have a two-year warranty when the product is a new card with the authorized reseller warranty sticker. The condition is specific to products sold through its authorized route in Japan; warranty length and registration rules can differ in other countries. A buyer importing the card should check the local MSI warranty policy and ask whether an overseas purchase is supported before treating the Japanese listing as a safe substitute for local stock.

The release describes the card as inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but it does not advertise a game code or a bundled copy in the purchase materials read for this article. Treat the visual collaboration and a game-in-box offer as separate things: only count a game bundle if the actual retailer listing names it and shows the redemption terms. Similarly, check whether the price includes a support plan, shipping, or regional sales tax rather than relying on a promotional image.

Who should pay for the collaboration design

The edition suits a Call of Duty collector who is already planning an RTX 5080 build and wants the yellow cooler, Ghost backplate, or a coordinated case theme. An owner of a well-cooled RTX 5080 would be paying mainly for the design, since the confirmed GPU class is unchanged.

For a new gaming PC, first verify the case size, power cable, display connections, and local availability; then compare the final cost with standard RTX 5080 cards. The Japanese ¥369,800 listing shows how a limited collaboration can price in one market, while MSI's selected-reseller language explains why another country may have a different price or no stock. Buy the artwork if it matters to the build, and use measured performance data to make the graphics decision.
